2017/18 Games Music Composition Course – Workshops

Film and video game music now enjoys a higher status and unrivalled innovation in modern classical music, such that it attracts recognition and awards by classical music critics and audiences alike. It also provides an excellent medium to engage young people in a way that has personal relevance and encourages them to fully explore their creative potential.

This second games music composition project from Absolute Classics provided the opportunity for students at Annan Academy who are studying music at a senior level to be mentored by a professional composer and orchestrator, Luci Holland in compositional technique and theory. To begin with, they chose visuals from video games, animations and short films to inspire their own creative process and then worked in group and 1-2-1 sessions with Luci on a monthly basis. Between sessions, they have been supported by Jamie Brand, Principal Teacher at Annan Academy  and they worked very hard in their own time, each creating full scores and parts that demonstrate a mature understanding of composition and personal expression.

“I would recommend the experience. It was great, as it gave us all the opportunity to work in a group sharing ideas and helping each other.”

“It gave us the opportunity to experience new ways of composing that related to the real world.”

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I hope it can be given to other students in the future.”

“The whole experience was a lot of fun and is something we can carry on and use later in life.”

“Even if you think you could never create your own music, I definitely think this process makes it possible for everyone and I would encourage anyone who gets the chance, to do so.”
